We flew with a UK chartered airline ‘Thompson’ into Sharm el-Sheikh airport. Our hotel was based in Shark’s Bay which was quite a metropolitan area on the coast. This area has really flourished over the last 50 years or so, once upon a time it was just a base for fishermen. Commercial development began during the Israeli presence in the area and to the present day is booming. Now it is a very popular holiday hot spot with all nationalities, families, friends and couples.
There have been terrorist attacks on the resort in the past, aimed at the tourist industry killing many people. This seems to all be in the past now and not put people off, as many thousands holiday safe here every year. The weather is the main attraction being guaranteed sunshine all through the summer months and also the great choice of all inclusive hotels at reasonable rates.
Arrival was quite intimidating in to the airport, lots of men shouting for you to use their taxi services and trying to help you with your luggage, later expecting money. Don’t let them help! Transfer was about 20 minutes. It was very touristy and more commercial than I expected. There were beautiful golden beaches, with water sports being offered all the way along the beach. The main attraction here is the snorkeling and diving. I couldn’t wait to see the underwater world at Ras Mohammed National Park.
Nightlife was very good, glitzy casinos, clubs, funky bars and coffee houses full of shisha pipes. Lots of restaurants everywhere even saw a few of the big names such as ‘Hard Rock café’, ‘Pizza Hut’ and ‘TGI Fridays’.
We really enjoyed our time in Egypt, enjoying a relaxing beach holiday as well as snorkeling everyday it was so good and also did a scuba dive. We visited Sinai, climbing Mount Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai desert where Moses is to have seen the burning bush. This was a very interesting trip. We visited Cairo and trekked around the pyramids. I will write different posts for each of these trips……
